How to make a video

This section provides information and tips on how to make a LandscapeHD video that will not get rejected on technical terms.

How to Make A LandscapeHD Video

Make sure you use music that is cleared and approved if you are making the production using your own music, or is from the approved list if you are just making a film.

The trick with making a LandscapeHD video is to try to use the best quality recording equipment for the film. The best quality films used to be sourced from film, however with the advent of three chip digital cameras LandscapeHD has started to use films made using digital video camcorder cameras.

Extremely good results can be obtained from the Panasonic DVX100A and new high definition cameras such as the Sony HDR-FX1, Canon XL H1 and others. However to get the best look you should work in progressive mode seeking a "film" look. Spend time setting up each shot and great results can be obtained at a fraction of the conventional film costs.

Most LandscapeHD films use long shots, not documentary style shooting. We mean ten second minimum shots with two second transitions. Cutting on the beat is not something that is encouraged unless appropriate and the end production should flow as an expression of the music.

Don't use library film that cuts from subject to subject as it doesn't work for LandscapeHD. We seek one subject videos where ever possible. Keep the colours all within the same range - changing from blue sky to grey and back to blue doesn't work in our continuity stakes.

Do not be trapped into the idea that because the music is called for example "Swan Lake" that the subject must be swans. Our most popular video is penguins featuring Pachelbel's canon - think laterally as a film maker.
Mood and atmosphere to match the music is what we seek. Great film making is not obvious and the director has no limit to subject matter. LandscapeHD can be as much at home in a bottle factory as it is in a desert.

Be warned however that no matter how interesting people are they tend to date by virtue of fashion fairly quickly. LandscapeHD isn't interested in fashion and so if people feature they probably need to be appropriate to the subject as ethnic detail rather than as subjects in themselves.

LandscapeHD shelf life is too long to invest in subjects that will date within a year or two when the music is timeless. LandscapeHD films tend to tell stories although few people realise. The Penguins is the life cycle of a penguin yet few people realise this first viewing. The story can be anything from the look of a fireplace to the inside of your body - there are no barriers to the creative LandscapeHD mind.

If you do pans - they must be wobble free - a bad wobble will eliminate the video. If you pull out from a shot and the camera jumps it's a no go for LandscapeHD - slow and professional at every level is essential. Use previous LandscapeHD film makers/cameramen etc if you can find one and avoid costly mistakes.

Some of the best LandscapeHD productions involved the classic visual story telling technique of using the frame to look at a subject, firstly in detail. Then the detail grows as the music shows the different images, leading to a final reveal of the whole subject. Very often the subject is concealed by not being able to see the whole subject initially with the end shot is the reveal. Sometimes a whole video can be a long shot where the action is so far into the shot that it is only after seeing the video a dozen times that the activity in shot is revealed.

Shoot in 1081 format if possible but master in 1081 and standard 720x576 television format as we need both. If you want to make the film yourself in our edit suite ask. Try to stick with easy material to start with but don't shoot water because its easy - because we have lots of water and sunsets:)

We don't have snow, storms, time-lapse, rain, weather extremes and mechanical images. Material out of copyright can also be used - old famous movies cut to LandscapeHD films - Metropolis as an example is currently being worked for a LandscapeHD film - source the material from the Net - think like a LandscapeHDr to get your video made.

Lastly tell the story in three to five minutes and see it spread your music and name around the world. We will list your details in our Hall of Fame and who knows where the next call may come from.
